Radon Inspections

Description

What is Radon Gas?

Radon gas is an invisible, odourless and tasteless gas produced when the mineral uranium (naturally present in soil and/or rock in many areas of Canada) breaks down and decays. Once released, radon breaks down into radioactive elements that can attach to dust and other substances in the air we breathe. When released into the atmosphere, the gas poses little risk as it dissipates due to dilution by fresh air. However, if trapped inside an enclosed space such as your home, especially in areas that are poorly ventilated, it can build up over time and pose a health risk to your family.

Where Does Radon Come From?

Radon gas can leech into your home through cracks in the foundation, around sump pumps or floor drains, window casements or cavities in walls. Concentrations can easily vary from home to home, even ones located next door to each other. Performing radon testing is the only way to confirm levels in the home.

Why is Radon Gas Important?

Radon is a known cause of cancer. Exposure to radon gas increases your risk of lung cancer especially if you are a smoker. Health Canada estimates that approximately 16% of lung cancer deaths are related to exposure to radon gas in the home. Health Canada’s guideline for taking action is 200Bcq/m3, however, the Canadian Cancer Society recommends that you take action to reduce radon levels in your home to as low as possible.

Why Should Foundation & Up Home Inspections Test Your Home for Radon?

We are certified and experienced in Radon testing. We will produce accurate readings throughout the home giving you the knowledge you need to feel safe. Reducing your risk of exposure to Radon the goal, and by making this test a part of your pre-purchase home inspection is wise, particularly in older brick homes.
